Quick Summary

NEET UG 2026, conducted by NTA, is one of India's largest entrance exams by candidate volume, gateway to roughly 1.29 lakh MBBS seats plus BDS, AYUSH, BVSc & AH and B.Sc Nursing (MNS) seats nationwide, including all AIIMS and JIPMER campuses. The exam was held on 3 May 2026 (pen-and-paper, 180 MCQs, 720 marks, +4/-1 marking), with a re-test on 21 June 2026 for a few affected centres. Result was declared 16 July 2026 with 11.21 lakh candidates qualifying; MCC and state counselling rounds are ongoing from late July 2026. NEET UG 2027 notification is expected around February 2027, with the government announcing a shift to computer-based test mode from 2027 onward following the 2026 paper-leak issue.

Exam overview

NEET UG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test — Undergraduate) is the single national-level entrance exam conducted by the NTA for admission to MBBS, BDS, and AYUSH (BAMS/BHMS/BUMS/BSMS) courses, as well as BVSc & AH and B.Sc Nursing (Military Nursing Service), at all medical, dental and AYUSH colleges across India, including AIIMS and JIPMER. It is one of the largest single-day competitive examinations in the country by candidate volume, with well over 20 lakh applicants competing each year for around 1.29 lakh MBBS seats and a similar number of BDS/AYUSH seats.

NEET UG 2026 was held on 3 May 2026 in pen-and-paper mode, with a re-test conducted on 21 June 2026 for candidates at a small number of centres affected by administrative or technical issues. NTA declared the result on 16 July 2026, with 11.21 lakh candidates qualifying — more than 58% of them women. Admission now proceeds through the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) for the All India Quota (15%), deemed/central universities and ESIC/AFMS seats, and through respective State Counselling Authorities for State Quota and private/management seats.

Because NEET UG feeds into every undergraduate medical, dental and AYUSH seat in the country — including all 15+ AIIMS and JIPMER — it effectively determines admission for the entire medical education pipeline, making its scale and stakes far larger than any single postgraduate medical exam.

Preparation tip

Focus on previous year questions and standard textbooks. Medical exams require deep understanding of concepts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the eligibility criteria for NEET UG 2026?
Candidates must have passed (or be appearing in) 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English from a recognized board, with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks in PCB (40% for SC/ST/OBC, 45% for General-PwD). The minimum age is 17 years as on 31 December of the admission year; there is no upper age limit under current NMC rules.
What is the exam pattern of NEET UG?
NEET UG is a pen-and-paper (OMR) test with 180 compulsory MCQs — 45 each from Physics and Chemistry, and 90 from Biology (Botany + Zoology) — for a total of 720 marks. Each correct answer earns +4 marks, each incorrect answer deducts 1 mark, and unattempted questions carry no penalty. The exam runs for 3 hours and is offered in 13 languages.
When was NEET UG 2026 held and when was the result declared?
NEET UG 2026 was conducted on 3 May 2026, with a re-test on 21 June 2026 for a limited number of affected centres. NTA declared the result on 16 July 2026 — 11.21 lakh candidates qualified out of the total applicants, clearing the way for MCC and state counselling processes.
How is admission given after qualifying NEET UG?
Qualifying NEET UG only makes a candidate eligible; it does not guarantee a seat. Candidates must separately register for counselling — with MCC (mcc.nic.in) for All India Quota, deemed/central universities, ESIC/AFMS and central pool seats, and with the respective state counselling authority for State Quota and private/management seats. Counselling for 2026 is expected to run across multiple rounds from late July through the year.
When will NEET UG 2027 be held?
NTA has not yet released the NEET UG 2027 notification; it is expected around February 2027, with the exam traditionally held on the first Sunday of May. Following the 2026 paper-leak controversy, the Education Ministry has announced that NEET 2027 onward will move to computer-based test (CBT) mode, likely conducted over multiple days/shifts rather than a single-day pen-and-paper exam.
