Quick Summary
Coal India Limited (CIL), a Maharatna PSU under the Ministry of Coal and the world's largest coal-mining company, recruits Management Trainees across Mining, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Civil, Finance, HR, Legal and other streams through its own Computer Based Test rather than GATE scores — a key difference from peer Maharatnas like ONGC, NTPC, SAIL, IOCL, GAIL and BHEL. CIL also conducts large-scale Non-Executive recruitment at the 10th/12th/ITI level for underground and surface mining roles, involving a CBT plus a Physical Efficiency Test. Recruitment spans CIL's subsidiaries including BCCL, CCL, ECL, SECL, WCL, NCL and MCL. The 2026 notification, exam dates and vacancy figures are yet to be announced; Management Trainees typically start at grade E2 with gross monthly emoluments of roughly Rs. 90,000-1,20,000.

- Non-Executive posts: 10th/12th pass or ITI/Diploma depending on trade, often with relevant trade certificate for Mining Sirdar, Overman, Winding Engine Driver and similar roles
- Age limit: Generally 18 to 30 years for Non-Executive and up to 30 years for Management Trainee, with standard government age relaxation for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD/Ex-servicemen
- Indian citizenship required
- Physical fitness and medical fitness standards mandatory for underground mining and Non-Executive roles
Syllabus

- Reasoning Ability and Quantitative Aptitude

- Discipline-specific technical/professional knowledge (Mining, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Civil, Finance, HR, Legal as applicable)
- General Knowledge and Numeracy for Non-Executive trade posts
Exam Pattern
- CIL conducts its own Computer Based Test (CBT) for Management Trainee recruitment — it does NOT use GATE scores, unlike ONGC, NTPC, SAIL, IOCL, GAIL and BHEL
- Management Trainee CBT includes a general aptitude/reasoning section plus a discipline-specific technical paper
- Non-Executive recruitment involves a CBT (General Knowledge, Reasoning, Numeracy, Trade-related questions) followed by a Physical Efficiency/Fitness Test
- Document verification and medical examination for shortlisted candidates
- Final merit prepared subsidiary-wise and category-wise based on CBT (and PET, where applicable) scores
